Description

Ever seeking to educate the layman, Hodge wrote a lecture series in 1860 for his congregation. Due to the success of the format when employed in his own church, he decided to write “Outlines of Theology.” He draws heavily on several works from his father, Charles Hodge.

In 1878, eighteen years later, he released the revised and expanded edition of this work, which contains several additional chapters. Hodge had also been employed as a lecturer in theology for over a decade, and used his experience in church history and teaching to improve this book.

Although it is no systematic theology, “Outlines of Theology” is an excellent resource for the budding armchair theologian. Perhaps slightly above the level of today's unread layman, it is not so obscure as to be incomprehensible to the modern reader. It will frame the various debates between the Reformed, Lutherans and Roman Catholics in their historical and biblical contexts, affording the reader an excellent starting point to jump into the more in-depth works of theology. It is also an indispensable tool for the pastor or professor who needs to quickly research the basic tenets of doctrine held by various churches.
